MENTORING PROGRAMS
For many writers regular membership in FWC will be sufficient. The free
consultation, the first ten pages critiqued for free, the newsletters, the
connection possibilities to other writers, and information about agents and
editors provide just what is needed. Click here to go to our member Benefits
page and to Join FWC.
Other writers, though, prefer even more individual attention, with help and
guidance through a total step-by-step plan to reach specific writing and
publishing goals.
Whether you are writing fiction or nonfiction, FWC has a mentoring program to
help you. Even if you haven't written a word yet, FWC can get you started on
the right track and help you stay there.
FWC offers two Novel Mentoring programs and one Nonfiction Mentoring program.
Those participating in mentoring programs do not have to pay an additional
fee to join FWC. You will automatically become members and receive the
newsletters, access to the members only area, and all other member benefits.
FWC Director, Blythe Camenson, will be your novel or nonfiction book mentor.
She is a well-published writer and experienced writing instructor. (Click on
About the Director to learn more about Blythe Camenson.) She'll take you
under her wing, become very familiar with your work, and will guide you every
step of the way.
Novel Mentoring Program #1
Your manuscript is not written or only partially
written.
Goal: To write a full-length, well-plotted, well-crafted novel manuscript.
You have an idea, but not sure where to go with it, not sure if you can plot
it out, then actually write it. FWC's Novel Mentoring Program #1 will help
you with the following steps:
- Planning Consultation
We'll start with a confidential phone call up to 30-minutes long that will
cover the following points: your writing experience, your writing concerns,
your writing goals. We'll go over the step-by-step plan and get you started.
- Plotting Guidance
We'll work back and forth until you have a workable plot that's believable,
but original, with a likeable main character who has a compelling conflict.
The plot will be recorded via listing plot points, then composing a one-page
synopsis.
- Developing Characters
We'll work on developing up to three main characters, their flaws and
foibles, their conflicts, and how they grow and change by the end of your
book.
Two stabs at writing those all-important first ten pages.
You'll get a free critique of those first ten, just as regular members do,
but you'll be given a second free critique after you revise the first ten.
Even if you realize those first ten must be scrapped, you'll be given a free
critique of your new first ten pages for the same project.
- After the first ten have been approved, you'll continue writing, then turn
in the first 50 pages for a full critique.
- Up to two more 30-minute phone calls to deal with plotting or writing
concerns.
Price: $475
Novel Mentoring Program # 2 Your manuscript is completed but you're not
sure if it's ready to be submitted, and you're not sure how to go about
submitting it.
Goal: To revise and polish your manuscript as needed and to start marketing
it.
This plan includes the first 5 steps of Plan #1, then from there goes on to
include:
6. a critique of a one-page query letter
7. a critique of the entire manuscript, including margin notes and a typed
single-spaced 3 to 5 page report as needed.
8. Up to a 30-minute phone call to discuss marketing strategies once the
manuscript has been revised and polished and ready to go out.
$475, plus fee for critiquing based on exact word count and page count. Fees
range between $2.50 and $5 per page, depending on the project.
Nonfiction Book Mentoring Program
With nonfiction you can often sell your book based on a proposal. You can
find out if there's interest before sitting down to write the book.
(Novelists must finish their books first, before they can be submitted.)
Goal: To develop a marketable book idea, and test the waters for agent/editor
interest before writing the book. Ideally, to land a book contract based on
the proposal. (For those with a finished product, the goal is the same-to
approach editors and agents with your book idea and land a contract.)
FWC's Nonfiction book mentoring program will help those with a book idea or
with a finished nonfiction book manuscript. The program covers the following
steps:
- Up to a 30-minute confidential phone call discussing your book idea.
- Help writing a one-page query letter. Up to two drafts critiqued.
- Step by step guidance composing up to a 20-page book proposal, two drafts
critiqued.
- Critique of a sample chapter up to 20 pages long--one draft critiqued.
- Up to a 30-minute phone call discussing marketing plans for your book once
the proposal and query are completed.
$475
