Formatting Your Manuscript

How you submit your work to editors and agents will show how professional you are. Sloppy submissions will work as a strike against you.

ALWAYS:

1. Use white, good quality paper (no onion skin--photocopy paper will do).

2. Type or print out on only one side of the page.

3. Double space. (Do NOT create an extra space between paragraphs--you can, however, leave an extra space between scene changes).

4. Place your name, title, and page number on the first line of EACH page. e.g. Camenson/Widow 3

5. Leave ample margins (3/4 " to 1") on all sides of all pages.

6. Indicate new chapters by writing Chapter One, Chapter Two, etc.

7. Start each new chapter on a new page.

8. Number your pages consecutively: e.g. Ch 1, page 1-20, Ch 2 begins on p 21.

9. Use a good printer--avoid dot matrix at all costs.

10. Type "The End" on the last page.

11. Include an SASE with enough postage to cover the return of your material. If your manuscript is disposable, include a #10 SASE for the reply.

12. Include a TYPED cover letter with your submission.

13. Include a cover page for your manuscript. In the upper left-hand corner include your name, address, phone number (very important--many acceptances come by phone), and your email address. Skip a space, then type your novel's title, genre, and word count. In the middle of the page, half-way down, type the title again and your byline.

14. Run your spellchecker before you print out your manuscript.

NEVER:

1. Overwrap your manuscript--you can use a padded envelope or a cardboard manuscript box (no bows or perfume, romance writers! :-)

2. Use staples on any submissions. Paper clips are okay but it is best to submit your material loose. Do NOT use any kind of binding.

3. Call a few days later to see if it arrived. (If you are worried, send a stamped, self-addressed postcard so they can check off the manuscript's arrival and return the card to you.)

4. Send your only copy.

5. Register or insure your submission (unless slides or other irreplaceable material is included.)

6. Send slides or other items unless requested 7. use fancy fonts or type faces. Times Roman or courier will do.
